In the first quarter of 2012 PJSC “Ilyich Iron and Steel Works” which is a part of Metinvest Group has invested 26,2 mln UAH in the realization of environmental measures. The specific emissions of contaminants for 1 ton of steel produced at the Works decreased on 0.7kg.
Among the main ecological measures implemented at MMKI are the major repair and routine maintenance of sinter machines № 2,4,11, gas cleaning systems of Blast Furnaces №4,5, gas cleaning systems of Basic Oxygen Converter Shop, major repairs and routine maintenance of other environmental facilities of the Works, processing of iron-containing slime, implementation of the technology of slag dump processing at the AMSOM units e. t.c.
At the Works a number of environmental investment projects are already approved or are being worked out, including the reconstruction of treatment plants at the runoff areas №1,2 (at the stage of feasibility study), the implementation of effective system of fish protection at the water supply point from the Kalmius river, aspiration of the coke drum drier at the Refractories Production Part of the Basic Oxygen Converter Shop, the reconstruction of the effluent disposal line of the Works.
Following the directions of the city executive committee the Works developed and implemented the measures for lowering the quantity of emissions into the free air at the period of lowest weather conditions. Taking into consideration the importance of smog elimination MMKI shortened the time of major repairs of the main technological units to the limit, with their shutdown for the period of expected lowest weather conditions. At the first quarter of the current year the sinter machines №11, 4, 12 (31 days), air-heaters of the Blast Furnace №1 (31 days) were shutdown for major repair , the work of the open hearth furnace was stopped for 25days e. t.c.
«Metinvest Group implemented the technological strategy of MMKI development up to the 2020, which stipulates the increase of manufacturing efficiency along with the simultaneous decrease of ecological impact"-pointed out the Head of the Works Vladimir Boyko.
The project stipulates the reconstruction and modernization of the existing and the construction of the new environmental facilities aiming to decrease the quantity of emissions into the free air, to decrease the industrial wastes and their treatment in order to correspond to the European standards, which means to decrease the specific emissions thrice.
